STAYING NATIVE WITH LARAN

Through extensive R&D, we’ve identified several tree species for their optimum adaptability to local climate, soil and ecological conditions. The main species planted are the Laran, Albizia and Khaya Ivorensis. The Laran – a tree native to Sabah, and found in our natural forests – has been chosen as our mother tree for its ability to multiply into fast-growing trees with proven utilisation, as well as its useful characteristics and properties. The selection of mother trees is crucial as only robust trees can produce the high germinating seeds needed for successful growth of our ITP.

Silviculture Treatment

Silviculture treatment plays a vital role in our forest management efforts at our conservation and riparian areas; helping to remove competing vegetation and woody vines that can slow the growth of future trees. At the same time, we make sure to keep the natural balance of the ecosystem intact. By focusing on promoting healthy growth of commercial tree species, we’re working toward a sustainable timber supply for the future. As of July 31, 2024, we’re proud to have completed silviculture treatment across 91% of our target areas, marking a great step forward in our long-term goals.

Replanting

Replanting is another essential piece of our sustainable forest management plan. It helps to regenerate the forest and ensure we continue to have a reliable source of timber. To give our replanted trees the best chance of thriving, we’ve identified potential threats like pests, diseases (such as termites and gall rust), and even animal damage that could impact their growth. In response, we’ve put in place a number of preventive measures to mitigate these risks, including regulated treatments and the installation of blinking lights.
