Protecting Biodiversity & Local Communities
As a responsible forest resources management company, Jawala is deeply committed to ensuring sustainability all round. To safeguard our environment, we commissioned an independent assessment of the High Conservation Value (HCV) forests within our plantation area. This assessment followed the guidelines set by the Malaysian National Interpretation for the Identification of High Conservation Values. From the results attained, we’ve designated 3,375 hectares — about 31% of our total licensed area of 11,043 hectares — as HCV forests.

High Conservation Values Areas
Six categories of HCV have been identified:
HCV 1: Rare, Threatened Endangered Plants and Animal Species
Trees
113 species of trees listed under IUCN Red List
41 Species of trees listed under The Sabah Conservation Wildlife Enactment 1997

Mammals
11 species of mammals listed under IUCN Red List
15 species of mammals listed under The Sabah Conservation Enactment 1997
5 species of mammals listed under CITES

Birds
33 species of birds listed under IUCN Red List
24 species of birds under The Sabah Conservation Wildlife Enactment 1997
7 species of birds listed under CITES

HCV 2: Landscape-level Ecosystems and Mosaics
This area is part of a large-scale forest landscape that is globally, regionally, or nationally significant. It supports substantial populations of most, if not all, naturally occurring wildlife species, maintaining their natural patterns of distribution and abundance. The ecosystems and their mosaics within this area are large enough to sustain viable populations of these species and uphold the environmental values inherent to these ecosystems.
HCV 3 & 4: Forest Ecosystem and Services
This forest area contains, or is part of, an endangered or threatened ecosystem. It plays a vital role in providing essential nature-based services, particularly those in critical situations such as Watershed Protection, Erosion Control and Fire Prevention and Mitigation.

HCV 5 & 6: Community Needs
This area is essential for meeting the basic needs of local communities. It plays a crucial role in supporting their livelihoods and well-being. Additionally, it is vital to the cultural identity of these communities, being central to their traditional practices and heritage.
